Mother's Day

What is Mother's Day?

Mother's day always falls on the 4th Sunday in Lent this has been a traditional Celebration for centuries.

Mother's day is thought to have originated from the 16th century.

This was brought about by the visiting of young men and women who were in domestic service, they were let home for the weekend of Lent by their masters or employees to travel to their original home town to visit their mothers and families.

On Mother’s Day the mother would go along for her annual visit to the church this visit would rejoin all the family together.

Mother's Day was also celebrated by the giving and eating of cakes.

This then became a regular tradition within the Church of England calendar.

Mother's Day was to become less celebrated in the 1930’s, but during the Second World War American solders brought celebrating Mother's Day back to how we know it nowadays.

By the 1950’s Mother's Day became more celebrated in the whole of the UK.

The upcoming Mother's day falls on March 18th 2012.
